At the beginning of September 2023, HMT microelectronic relocated within Biel to Aarbergstrasse, where it moved into the former Swisscom building. The company left its long-standing location on Alfred-Aebi-Strasse because the infrastructure had reached its limits due to the continuous growth of the company. HMT microelectronic AG in Biel has been manufacturing microchips - more precisely so-called ASICs, i.e. microelectronic circuits - since 1987. The company currently employs 43 people.
CEO Günther Hoheisel says in the press release that the company wanted to optimize processes and improve working conditions for employees. The company was therefore looking for a new location. The company found what it was looking for in the city. "Our move is a clear commitment to Biel as a location," says Günther Hoheisel. According to the company itself, it has a full order book and is looking positively to the future. The company has moved into 1400 m² of space on Aarbergstrasse. In the newly opened test center, so-called wafers are tested, which form the basis for microchips.
According to the company, HMT microelectronic has always focused on a European strategy. Since 2012, around ten million Swiss francs have been invested in the company's own test center and a conscious decision has been made to use European companies as partners and suppliers. This proves "that it is perfectly possible in Europe and Switzerland to keep up with the cost structure from the Far East. This is thanks in particular to the higher level of training of the employees and the consistent pursuit of automation," the company continues.
